Mattress Fund

The best way to keep your money is to hide it! Not under your mattress, preferably, but in a different bank account. This is a powerful way to keep a day to day look at your finances that will take you less than an hour a month, while ensuring that you are always putting money towards the things that are important to your church, such as:

BUILDING FUND     |     PAYING OFF DEBT     |     RENOVATION OR EQUIPMENT UPGRADE

Step 1. Open up a separate bank account for this fund.

Within your bank (or a separate high interest savings account that we recommend), open up a new account and name it for what you are saving for.

Step 2. Weekly deposit funds.

Every Monday, tally up the total contributions from that previous week, and transfer the allotted percentage to that account. That amount is totally up to you and how much margin you have in your budget. Short term goals are great to do a large percentage so you can knock it out fast, but for long term goals, we recommend a regular (but smaller) percentage.

Step 3. Watch the account accumulate and make an impact!

Every week, as you make this transfer, the balance in that separate account will accumulate. With the exception of emergencies, it is crucial that you don’t withdraw from that account (which can be tempting, because there can be various reasons to pull from that account).

If you don’t have a bookkeeper who is able to regularly send you reports that compare to your budget and percentages, give us a call! We specialize in doing books specifically for church planters and churches!
